"The Poplar Field", by William Cowper

After reading, discussing and analyzing the poem "The Poplar Field", by William Cowper in the subject of LIterature, the teacher told us to make a presentation and include some of the aspects that appear in the poem. I did it with Bruno Fabrichini.

  1. Bruno and Octavio,
    Very good work. Some comments:
When you describe the plot, don't go into so much detail. It should be a summary, so the mentioning of the seat that once lent me a shade and the bird that has gone to another retreat shouldn't appear there, it's repetitive since you use the same episodes when you develop the themes. More appropriate for a summary would be just saying that the speaker realizes that the field has changed because all the trees have been cut down. What you included about his reflections is very good. Keep in mind we reflect upon the fact that... and not we reflect upon that.
When you write about the themes, you say that there are two themes. This is not the case. There are other themes in this poem, such as nature or life. You should say "two of the themes that are developed in the poem are..."
The analysis of the stanza is very good, but it's not just a visual image. The stone on my breast is very kinaesthetic, you can feel the weight of the stone.
Alliteration and personification are very good but the metaphor is wrong. Why do you say that the trees will not grow? A grove is not a grave but a group of trees. Indeed, the trees will grow, but he will be dead by then.
